Garmisch Partenkirchen - My Favorite Place To Stay While Skiing In Bavaria.

I always have the most fun in Garmisch Partenkirchen.

Garmisch Partenkirchen in WinterIt is my most favorite place to stay while skiing in Bavaria. Not only is it a picturesque town, it is easy to get around and actually has a night life.

It is like a big play ground and I can always find somewhere to go or something to do.

Against the backdrop of the Bavarian Alps, Garmisch Partenkirchen is the year-round resort and spa town for those who enjoy the outdoors.

You can find everything for an action-filled, sporty vacation or a leisurely and relaxing vacation.

Either way you go, you will want to spend a lot of your time outside enjoying the beautiful mountains and fresh air.

Bicycling in the AlpsThe area around the town of Garmisch Partenkirchen offers everything from the best snowboarding and skiing in Bavaria to river rafting, mountain biking, hang gliding, tennis and golf.

However, Winter Sports are the number one draw. There are over 62 miles (99 km) of downhill ski runs, over 40 ski lifts and cable cars, and 115 miles of cross-country ski trails (Loipen).

If you don’t partake in winter sports yourself, you may be lucky enough to be a spectator of one of the many International skiing competitions that often take place on the slopes.

Things To Do In & Around Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Chris at the ZugspitzeGermany's highest peak, The Zugspitze (9,731ft) is also an easy trip from Garmsich. You can get to the Zugspitze by way of the Eibsee which is 6 miles from Garmisch Partenkirchen. Get to the summit by a cogwheel train or by cable car. If you are Really fit, have a lot of time and the weather is good, you can hike up to the top. The rewards for your efforts are great. Views from the summit are breathtaking.

Oberammergau is just a short trip north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It is famous for the Passion Play, fresco painted buildings and for intricate wood carvings. The small village is also a top region for cross-country skiers.

Some of the most amazing monasteries and castles in Bavaria are easy to reach from Garmisch Partenkirchen.

I have a hard time choosing between the Ettal Monastery (Kloster Ettal), Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein) and Linderhof Castle (Schloss Linderhof). As nice as these places are any time of year, they are what I call “fairy-tale pretty” in the winter snow.

Another exciting place to see is the Partnachklamm. The Partnach River runs through the narrow gorge. A series of galleries and tunnels has been carved out of the rock along one side, so you can walk along the rushing river and pass under the waterfalls.

Depending on the season, the experience of walking along the rushing water is very different. During the summer months, it is a refreshing and shady break from the summer heat. In the winter, the ice and snow transform the gorge into gallery of amazing ice sculptures and giant icicles.

Garmisch Partenkirchen is a great place to stay while in Bavaria. As you will discover, It is a place bless with a magnificent setting and has its own distinct flair of cosmopolitan ski resort and old-world alpine village.
