The Passion Play or Passionsspiel occurs only once every 10 years and 2010 is the year for the newest production.

Here, you will find lots of information for your Passion Play Trip -Oberammergau Passion Play Scene

What Is The Passion Play?

The Passion Play in Oberammergau is an event that takes place once every 10 years.

The history of the Passion Play began in the year 1634 as thanks and a vow to God for sparing them from the plague. In staying true to their vow, the 41st production of The Passion Play will once again take place in 2010.

The play, which is the reenactment of life and death of Jesus Christ, involves almost 2,000 residents of Oberammergau, who become performers, musicians, and stage technicians.

Oberammergauers do not perform the play to make money for themselves. No individual makes any great personal profit.

Profits are split four ways: 25% goes toward the next play; 25% is for the church; 25% is for the performers; and 25% is for improving accommodations for the pilgrims’ visit the village.

The play is considered a religious service. The community refuses to allow it to be recorded, filmed, or televised, and will not even permitted the cast to go on tour.

The Passion Play Theater

The site of the Passion Play is the 4,700 seat Passion Play Theater. It has a huge open air stage. The audience sits inside, under the roof, but the stage is open to the sky and against the backdrop of the beautiful Bavarian Alps.

Passion Play Costumes

The Passion Play Costumes are all painstakingly handmade, intricate and beautiful. The villagers spend over a year preparing for the play. The men of the village grow out their hair and beards and the women and girls also grow their hair long.
